Boating Magazine Wins Video Awards

2021 Boating Writers International Boating Video category swept by Bonnier brand.

At the annual and prestigious Boating Writer’s International Awards, BOATING took away six awards, most notably completely sweeping the ”Boating Video” category.

In the Boating Videos category, Boating earned First, Second and Third places, plus a Merit Award. For the Boat Tests category, Boating garnered Second Place. In the print-web category of Seamanship Rescue and Safety, boating scored a Third Place prize.

This award-winning video was produced under a grant from the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund, administered by the US Coast Guard.

In BWI’s 2020 Contest, presentations in 15 contest categories representing $15,000 in cash awards were made to first ($500), second ($300) and third ($200) place scorers. Cash award recipients also received a recognition plaque noting their “Excellence in creating compelling stories about boating through entertaining, educational and inspiring journalism.”

“I am proud and fortunate to work with these award-winning pros,” said Boating Editor-in-Chief, Kevin Falvey. “My respect to them, and my great thanks and kudos to the support staff – those behind the faces and bylinesthe videographers, editors, producers, and art directors – who helped these winners achieve greatness and helped further Boating’s leadership position at the forefront of marine enthusiast media.”

Randy Vance, BoatingLAB Director, the most prolific video producer and presenter for Boating, and parent company, Bonnier Corporation, commented on his win:

Video is the fastest, perhaps the only, growing form of media in the world, today. Participating in it is a rewarding challenge in team work. While writers are solely responsible for crafting their story, video writer/hosts’ projects succeed only with the team work of screen editors and videographers who share the vision of the presenter’s story. Editors and videographers can, and usually do, have equal impact on the story created for the audience.

Our award is the result of contributions by Bonnier Production Manager and videographer Shalley Chapman, staff editor Kenneth Johnson and lead videographer, freelancer Luke Yong

Falvey, who’s also Editorial Director of Bonnier’s Boating and Watersports titles, cited the sweep of the video category as significant. “We’ve worked hard to evolve as a media brand. Boating’s team creates compelling and engaging content on all platforms including print, web, social media and video. These wins validate that evolution.”

Interestingly, while Boating produces some 200 videos per year covering a range of topics from boat reviews to how-to, two of the award-winning videos concerned boating safety, and in fact, were produced under a grant from the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund, administered by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Bonnier Corporation has been producing boating safety content with, and for, the U.S. Coast Guard and in collaboration with the Water Sports Foundation, Inc., the educational arm of the Watersports Industry Association.
